Inclusive Intelligence: Merging UDL, Accessibility, and Privacy in AI-Enhanced Learning
Tuesday May 13, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am PDT
This session explores the powerful intersection of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), inclusive practices, and data privacy considerations in AI-enhanced educational environments. Drawing from Peninsula School District's experience implementing AI through an inclusivity lens, we'll demonstrate how these technologies can provide multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression—the core principles of UDL—while prioritizing accessibility and student privacy.

Participants will discover how AI can catalyze fostering inclusion and autonomous learning when thoughtfully integrated with UDL principles. We'll address critical ethical considerations surrounding AI implementation, including bias awareness and data privacy protections that ensure equitable access for all learners. The presentation will offer frameworks for evaluating AI tools through an inclusivity lens and developing ethical guidelines that center student agency while maintaining high standards.

Through practical applications and case studies, attendees will learn strategies for using AI to eliminate barriers, cultivate inclusive educational spaces, and enhance learning for diverse students. Join us to explore how integrating UDL principles, accessibility considerations, and privacy frameworks can transform AI from a technological tool to a powerful force for educational equity. This collaborative approach addresses immediate classroom challenges and catalyzes systemic change toward a more just and equitable educational landscape in the digital era.

A Balanced Approach to AI Integration at the Elementary Level
Tuesday May 13, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am PDT
Educators have concerns about the potential for AI to change how children's brains develop, particularly with regard to attention, social skills, and deep learning abilities. While AI tools can provide educational benefits, especially when designed to engage children interactively, there are concerns that excessive or passive use may hinder neural growth in key developmental areas. A balanced approach that includes real-world interactions, physical play, and cognitive engagement, combined with thoughtful AI use, is likely the healthiest for young children’s brain development.

In essence, while AI is not inherently harmful, its impact depends on how it is used in the context of children's overall developmental needs.

AI Agentics, the Organizational Mind, and the World of Work in 2030
Tuesday May 13, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am PDT
This presentation offers educators a glimpse into the 2030 workplace, where human ingenuity partners with the power of AI agents, creating a dynamic "Organizational Mind." This O'Mind isn't a single entity, but a dynamic, evolving knowledge repository built from the collective work and interactions of humans and AI within an organization.

Imagine a digital brain that captures every decision, every project, every lesson learned, and makes that knowledge accessible and actionable. This shared intelligence outlives individual employees, becoming a powerful asset that fuels continuous learning, informed decision-making, and unprecedented innovation.

We'll explore how this collaboration transcends routine tasks, empowering humans to focus on creativity, critical thinking, and complex problem-solving.

Imagine students prepared not just for jobs, but for a future where they co-create with AI, contributing to this constantly evolving organizational intelligence. This session examines the skills and adaptability needed to thrive in this environment, focusing on how educators can equip students to navigate the ethical considerations, leverage the learning opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to this new world of work.

Join us to discuss how we can empower the next generation to shape and benefit from the transformative potential of the workplace of the future.

Between Four Minds: Rethinking Human Relationships in the Age of AI
Tuesday May 13, 2025 11:00am - 12:00pm PDT
What happens when two people interact – not just as humans – but as augmented thinkers, each accompanied by an invisible AI co-mind? In a world increasingly shaped by AI companions, copilots, and advisors, our once two-mind relationships (teacher-student, doctor-patient, colleague-colleague, partner-partner) are becoming entanglements between four minds: yours, mine, and our respective machines.

This interactive session introduces the emerging concept of "Between Four Minds," a framework for understanding how AI mediates, reshapes, and even complicates human-to-human dynamics. We’ll explore its implications for education, where students and teachers are no longer isolated thinkers, but hybrid minds – relying on AI for writing, feedback, tutoring, and even emotional regulation.

Through discussion, practical scenarios, and audience reflection, we’ll consider: How do we navigate this new terrain ethically and relationally? What does “authentic” human connection look like when AI is always in the room? Participants will leave with new language, fresh questions, and space to co-construct this evolving framework together.

Using AI as a Thought Partner
Tuesday May 13, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm PDT
How can we use AI tools to increase our efficiency? AI tools are good at de-personalizing communication, summarizing information, and improving our written work and plans.
We will describe AI tools we’ve used: email - both analysis of incoming messages and creation of responses, surveys - how to use AI tools to summarize responses and create action items, frameworks - collect basics of a framework and identify missing components. Throughout all of these activities, the human component is critical for collaboration and innovation. We will discuss how and when AI is an appropriate thought partner - and when it’s not.

The AI and Youth Initiative: Policy, Advocacy, Education & Everything in Between!
Tuesday May 13, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm PDT
The Encode Oregon chapter is a completely youth-led organization that seeks to uplift the student voice in artificial intelligence policy, education, and advocacy. As students, we are often a minority in spaces that directly relate to and affect out futures, especially when we consider the ways that AI is rapidly developing and making its way into our classrooms. Our session will be a chance for educators, policy-makers, students, and community members to understand how students can get involved in advocating for equitable and responsible technology use inside and outside of the classroom. We lead community AI workshops at local community centers, libraries, online community forums, and in our classrooms, centered around this idea of "by youth, for youth" and also actively work toward empowering youth by ensuring their know their rights around technology that's quickly making its way into their classrooms and social circles, such as surveillance technologies or even AI-powered deepfakes. We aim to not only spread awareness about the work we are doing through this session, but to truly create a space where we can learn from each other as to how we can work toward increased student involvement in this space, and why it is so vital!

AI, Cognitive Offloading, and Critical Thinking
Tuesday May 13, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm PDT
As the influence of generative AI (genAI) on education continues to grow, teachers and school leaders face the challenge of determining if, how and when these tools should be integrated into classrooms. We need to be thinking about how AI can help enhance learning without undermining student creativity and critical skill development. Leaning on ODE’s recently updated genAI guidance for schools, this session explores how a balanced approach to using these tools can help ensure use of AI serves as a tool for growth while avoiding overreliance that fosters the critical offloading of skill and ability. Attendees will gain insights into when and how to incorporate genAI appropriately, focusing on scaffolding strategies that support foundational skill-building, critical thinking, and creativity. Participants will examine real-world examples, identify risks of over-reliance on AI, and explore frameworks for thoughtful and purposeful integration that help to empower students in their own learning trajectory as they move towards a future shaped, in part, by AI.
