The AI and Youth Initiative: Policy, Advocacy, Education & Everything in Between!
Tuesday May 13, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm PDT
The Encode Oregon chapter is a completely youth-led organization that seeks to uplift the student voice in artificial intelligence policy, education, and advocacy. As students, we are often a minority in spaces that directly relate to and affect out futures, especially when we consider the ways that AI is rapidly developing and making its way into our classrooms. Our session will be a chance for educators, policy-makers, students, and community members to understand how students can get involved in advocating for equitable and responsible technology use inside and outside of the classroom. We lead community AI workshops at local community centers, libraries, online community forums, and in our classrooms, centered around this idea of "by youth, for youth" and also actively work toward empowering youth by ensuring their know their rights around technology that's quickly making its way into their classrooms and social circles, such as surveillance technologies or even AI-powered deepfakes. We aim to not only spread awareness about the work we are doing through this session, but to truly create a space where we can learn from each other as to how we can work toward increased student involvement in this space, and why it is so vital!
