A Balanced Approach to AI Integration at the Elementary Level
Tuesday May 13, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am PDT
Educators have concerns about the potential for AI to change how children's brains develop, particularly with regard to attention, social skills, and deep learning abilities. While AI tools can provide educational benefits, especially when designed to engage children interactively, there are concerns that excessive or passive use may hinder neural growth in key developmental areas. A balanced approach that includes real-world interactions, physical play, and cognitive engagement, combined with thoughtful AI use, is likely the healthiest for young children’s brain development.

In essence, while AI is not inherently harmful, its impact depends on how it is used in the context of children's overall developmental needs.

Between Four Minds: Rethinking Human Relationships in the Age of AI
Tuesday May 13, 2025 11:00am - 12:00pm PDT
What happens when two people interact – not just as humans – but as augmented thinkers, each accompanied by an invisible AI co-mind? In a world increasingly shaped by AI companions, copilots, and advisors, our once two-mind relationships (teacher-student, doctor-patient, colleague-colleague, partner-partner) are becoming entanglements between four minds: yours, mine, and our respective machines.

This interactive session introduces the emerging concept of "Between Four Minds," a framework for understanding how AI mediates, reshapes, and even complicates human-to-human dynamics. We’ll explore its implications for education, where students and teachers are no longer isolated thinkers, but hybrid minds – relying on AI for writing, feedback, tutoring, and even emotional regulation.

Through discussion, practical scenarios, and audience reflection, we’ll consider: How do we navigate this new terrain ethically and relationally? What does “authentic” human connection look like when AI is always in the room? Participants will leave with new language, fresh questions, and space to co-construct this evolving framework together.

Elevating the Rigor of Learning for Every Learner with AI
Tuesday May 13, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm PDT
In this interactive, hands-on session, educators and school leaders will explore how to leverage Colleague AI to create differentiated learning experiences and implement mastery-based grading practices. Participants will learn to analyze and modify instructional tasks for different depths of knowledge (DOK) levels, ensuring rigorous and personalized learning opportunities for all students. Moreover, through hands-on practice with Colleague AI tools, educators will master the creation of standards-aligned, mastery-based rubrics and write detailed, growth-oriented feedback. The session emphasizes practical implementation, combining AI-enhanced capabilities with sound pedagogical frameworks to support diverse learner needs. Participants will leave with immediately applicable tools and strategies, including templates for differentiated task design, sample rubrics aligned with standards, and frameworks for implementing mastery-based grading in their classrooms.
